John Legend 'Once Again' Album Review

To change your name from plain old John Stephens to the somewhat more impressive John Legend speaks of a remarkable amount of self-confidence – or just plain stupidity. It’s lucky then, that John Legend more than lives up to his name.

Legend is sickeningly multi-talented – singer, songwriter, pianist, triple Grammy winner and all-round hottie. He also oozes class from every pore and has a voice that transforms any song into a classic. Lucky again then that he doesn’t just sing any old song, but proper old-school soul delights that showcase his smoother-than-a-Robbie-Williams-chat-up-line voice to perfection.

Second album Once Again (the follow-up to his sublime debut Get Lifted) suffers slightly from a lack of Kanye West and up-tempo numbers but almost makes up for it with the sheer splendour of these romantic, sensuous and seductive songs. First single Save Room is the most obviously catchy of them, a slightly funky soul workout that Marvin Gaye would probably be proud of.

It’s a travesty that Legend isn’t massive in the UK – after all, who do we have? Ronan Keating? Daniel Beddingfield? Please, don’t make me laugh. They can only dream of even being a backing singer to quality like this. Once Again might be a slow-burner but remember, they’re always the ones to watch.
