Jessica Simpson 'A Public Affair' Album Review

What with Britney flashing her crotch (and shaving her head) left right and centre and Christina believing she is channelling the voice of dead soul artists, the time was ripe for Jessica Simpson to claim position as prime American pop strumpet. And with new single A Public Affair, a rip-off of Madonna’s Holiday but a glorious joyous and wondrous pop record nonetheless, it looked like she was leaving her bland toothy efforts of yesteryear behind.

Sadly, the album proves to be (rather like one of its tracks Push Your Tush, a stupendously amazing title that quickly descends into an embarrassing mess of a hoedown) a great big missed opportunity. There are flashes of the right direction in songs such as B.O.Y., a catchy danceable track that recalls some of Britney’s best and the toe-tapping band-blasting Swing With Me, the result of Simpson watching too many musicals but sadly, these inspired moments are few and far between.

The rest of A Public Affair (the album), with its middle-of-the-road cheese and sickeningly saccharine ballads, would probably have gone down spectacularly in the 90s. Stuff like The Lover In Me just about manages to be dated in a good way; tuneless mediocrity like Let Him Fly, Between You And I and Walkin’ Round In A Circle, which drags on longer than a life sentence, should have remained in the time capsule. Simpson has clearly learnt nothing from her hideous reworking of These Boots Are Made For Walking, inflicting upon us another dire cover, this time You Spin Me Round (Like A Record), which she sings as if she’s one of the undead.

Come back Britney, all is forgiven.

ON REPEAT: A Public Affair, B.O.Y., Swing With Me

PRESS SKIP: Walkin’ Round In A Circle, Let Him Fly, You Spin Me Round, Push Your Tush
