Update: we’ve interviewed the girls – watch our Girls Can’t Catch interview…
You wait ages for a new girl band and then several come along at once. Hot on the heels of The Saturdays and The Dolly Rockers are Girls Can’t Catch; from the same label as the former, they’re definitely more Saturdays than Dollies. Is this a good thing? Click ‘continue reading’ to watch the video for their first single, Keep Your Head Up, out on July 27.
Fresh from supporting Girls Aloud on tour, Girls Can’t Catch are made up of Jess (blonde), Phoebe (brunette) and Daizy (bob). You might recognise Phoebe from defunct X-Factor band Hope and that fact is currently the most interesting thing about them. Well apart from their dodgy band name (whatever next? Girls Can’t Read Maps? Boys Can’t Multi-Task? Record Label Execs Can’t Think Up Good Names?).
If debut single Keep Your Head Up is anything to go by, their sound will be a very radio-friendly brand of electropop that has done The Saturdays no harm whatsoever; indeed, the pattern of rather bland (and in Keep Your Head Up’s case, indecipherably fast) verses combined with a great chorus is familiar from the Sats debut, If This Is Love, but the fizzy delight of the ‘Keep your head up-up-up-up-up’ refrain is a nice touch. The video, featuring the girls playing croquet (?!) in a rubbish dump (?!?!) is utter nonsense though and does the song no favours (however, Olly would like to point out that the blokes in it are fit), while the girls’ styling is currently all a bit blah. But we’re hopeful that Girls Can’t Catch sock it to us with a second single à la Up – and with album writing credits going to girl band alumni Karen Poole (Alisha’s Attic) and Shaznay Lewis (All Saints), the signs are good.
But what do you think of Keep Your Head Up – shit or hit? Let us know!
