Rather than a quiet night at TT Towers, we were actually meant to be enjoying the Fun experience first-hand live in London tonight, but a rather unfortunate run in with a Candy King sweet concession leading to a terrible night’s sleep, plus the group pushing back their performance well past teentoday.co.uk’s bed time means we’re sat at home sharing their genius with you. Our loss is, as ever, your gain. Hit “continue reading” to meet your new favourite band.
Described by the PR machine and their website’s rather extensive about us page as “meld(ing) an array of diverse inspirations – spanning Broadway to The Beach Boys, “Nilsson Schmilsson’ to “Pinkerton” – into an irresistible collection of freewheeling pop songcraft.” – we’re more plainly labeling them as “very good”. Let’s get straight to the point – the accurately named, if unnecessarily punctuated fun. make lunatic pop records that shimmer so bright, are so exuberant, Doctors nationwide should be mandated to prescribe their music to depressed types.
Mixing the best bits of the Scissor Sisters (without the overwrought camp), Damien Rice (without the sleepiness) and Mika (without the brainpunching incessant falsetto), Fun are a 3 piece New York band formed of Nate Ruess (who does the singing bit), Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff (who do the playing instrument bits. Lots of them). Plus, working on the assumption none of them possess a female’s voice, at least one other too.
Purveyors of brash, obnoxious genre-hopping theatrical pop opuses that take in a musical a-z with limitless panache, gusto and a sprinkling of glitter, they’re the type of band that inspire proper music journalists to reel off a full thesaurus-fest. In more good news: they also fall under the all-important ‘not unattractive’ category.
Rather uselessly for almost anyone, but as seems to be the preferred route for establishing a new act, Fun release double A-side Walking the Dog and Be Calm as a limited edition 7” vinyl at the end of this month. A more important date for your diary? Debut album Aim & Ignite will be in shops on May 31st. But in a move of unprecedented generosity idiocy, you can stream the whole thing totally free below.
And there you go, that’s Fun for you. Expect fawning write-ups of their every move over the next few months. And, if like teentoday.co.uk, you’ve cruelly missed your opportunity for the Fun experience live and in Technicolor this time around, fear not, the band return for a full UK tour this Summer. See you in the front row?
