Owen Wilson “happy” for show to go on

Owen Wilson is “very happy” for the release of his new film to go ahead, despite it taking on ghoulish parallels with his own life. Wilson allegedly slashed his own wrists recently in an apparent suicide bid and in the film, The Darjeeling Limited, he plays a character who deliberately crashes his motorbike.

Wes Anderson, the film’s director and a friend of Wilson’s, says, “That’s not what I want and not what Owen wants. Owen’s very happy we’re releasing it now.”

Co-writer Roman Coppola (son of Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola)added, “There’s the show business adage of the show must go on. We’re all sympathetic about our friend’s well being. I haven’t spoken with him about this but I think he’d be very eager that the film be shown. He’s proud of the work we did. In terms of art and personal life echoing one another, that’s the proper way to make a movie. I’ve been witness to a lot of movies that my dad did and it’s very familiar to me that your personal life reflects the theme of the movie.”

The Darjeeling Limited has been doing the rounds of the film Festivals in recent weeks and winning plaudits everywhere for it’s writers, director and three main stars: Wilson, plus Jason Schwartzman (another Coppola relative!) and Oscar Winner, Adrien Brody. Most recently it has been selected as the Closing Gala for this year’s BFI London Film Festival, which begins on October 17 and closes with the film on November 1 at the Odeon Leicester Square.

Simon Pegg, Nick Frost Going to America

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have decided to go to America. According to MTV Movies, Pegg and Frost are hard at work on a script that places these two funny men in the States.

Pegg told MTV that “It’s called ‘Paul’ and it’s a road movie about two British geeks in America.” He went on to say this film will be unlike the pairs previous two films, SHAUN OF THE DEAD and HOT FUZZ, and that Pegg will be the sap in this one.

No director has been set for this one and neither has a release date.

Narnia releases pushed back

The third Chronicles of Narnia movie, which was due to be released next year, has been pushed back to 2010.

Production on The Voyage of the Dawn Treader will begin next summer, instead of January, due to what Disney described as “the challenging schedules for our young actors”.

Fans will also have to wait a little longer to see the second Narnia film, Prince Caspian, which was scheduled for a December release but will now open in May so that it doesn’t clash with producers Walden Media’s Sony release The Water Horse.

Notes On A Scandal DVD Review by Rachel Read

Notes On A Scandal is a master-class in truly fantastic acting. Based on the book by Zoë Heller (which is also fantastic, go read it), the textured and compelling performances given by both Dame Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett are what elevate this film into four-star territory.

Dench plays Barbara Covett, who becomes obsessed with fellow teacher Sheba Hart (Blanchett) and uncovers the latter’s affair with a schoolboy. So far, so standard. But Dench relishes the chance to sink her teeth into this great cinematic monster, both achingly vulnerable and freakishly creepy, with a chilling voiceover that dominates proceedings. Meanwhile, Blanchett is luminous in her role, making the character a hell of a lot more sympathetic than in the novel. Bill Nighy is also rather wonderful in his small role as Sheba’s husband.

The best lines in Patrick Marber’s script are lifted directly from Heller’s caustic original. Unfortunately, the film sometimes forces Barbara into being far more of a crazed lesbian than the book did – lucky then, that the actors make the whole thing so utterly believable. For a film without much plot, things are surprisingly well-paced, making the action even more gripping.

Special features are a bit rubbish - a couple of featurettes that are mostly film clips and some real rip-offs, ‘webisodes’ that are all of a minute long. But really, hearing the actors discuss and dissect character almost destroys the spell that the movie casts on you. Let the performances, all of which were cruelly overlooked in Oscar season, speak for themselves. Bar the rather hammy and far-too-neat ending (another reason why you should read the book), Notes On A Scandal is an intelligent, compulsive and brilliantly-acted film.
