So hard for young people to get a job?

Hi, this is my first post. I'm 17.
Why is it so hard for young people to get a job? I must have sent about fifty cover letters & CVs out to places; some that were actually advertising and also to the majority of shops in my area asking if they have any vacancies. Yet still, after four months, I've only had three interviews. It took six weeks for my first letter to arrive, a letter of rejection from a retailer that had advertised for part time sales assistants, I wasn't even offered the interview. I have 12 GCSEs, and not one bellow a C. But no, clearly I'm just not good enough to even have an interview for a sales assistant vacancy.
I waited another two weeks before I heard from someone else, this time by phone and it was good news. I had an interview for a job that I'd applied for two months before (Crazy...) It was a christmas temp vacancy at a well known retailer, I went to the interview, dressed in black trousers, shirt and tie. I took a folder containing my GCSE certificates and my school reports along with anything else that I though I'd need in order to prove I was worth employing. Anyway after being asked one question, "Tell me about yourself" and being told what the job would involve I was offered the job. Finally after two months of looking. It was only a christmas temp vacancy, but it was money.
Anyway that lasted till Christmas as that's when my contract ended. Leading upto the final days of my contract I heard from two more places; one arranging an interview for the position of "Office Junior", (Quite a promising position compared to my Xmas job), and the other a part time job at a small shop in a retail outlet. Funily enough both interviews were on the same day, both seemed to go well, and they both said they'd get back to me. A week later the shop got back to me in the form of a rejection letter, and as of yet I still haven't heard back from the office. Unsurprisingly I'm not holding out too much hope.
So now back to the drawing board (and the post office for another book of stamps!) I wonder how long it'll take this time before I have an interview, or even hear back from someone.. it was bad enough before christmas when shops were suppopsedly looking to employ people for the xmas jobs, now it'll be even worse.
Sorry, rant over (well for now anyway! ) It just annoys me that I've written so many letters, made so many phone calls, and out of it I heard back from Four places - three for interviews (This being over a period of four months remember) and got ONE christmas job.
Anyone else had similiar problems?

it's because you are young with no experience, having the temporary christmas job should help make sure you include it on your knew CVs hopefully it shouldn't be as bad this time but be prepared...

I sympathise with you, I remember when I was fourteen (near enough your age) writing to tons of companies, no one wanted to know. Only thing I could do was a paper round.

I'm still in college and I didn't realize that looking for a job is tough. I'm sure if you are patient enough a job will come and it will surely be a job you might keep for a long time. I do hope you'll find that job which is really suited for you.

From my experience I've found it really hard to find which companys have vacacancies, particularily ones like sales assistants.

It's a different matter finding places that actually have vacancies.
