VV Brown - Travelling Like The Light album review

She takes that bloody keyboard everywhere

We first wrote about VV Brown back in November, posing the question ‘Is VV Brown vv good?’ The answer was yes by the way but no-one seemed to take much notice, with first single Crying Blood flopping, second single LEAVE! flopping and third single Shark In The Water currently doing slightly-better-than-flopping-but-still-flopping-nonetheless. Now her album, Travelling Like The Light has arrived and all I can reiterate is: VV Brown is vv good. Seriously.

The album kicks off with a massive drum roll and then what sounds like a baby bawling. From this ten seconds, you practically know everything about the VV that you need to – she’s a bit mental and her music’s also a bit mental accordingly. Rather than mining the 60s smoky-eyed soul that the Duffys, Adeles and Pixies of the world have been doing since Mark Ronson shook his horn at Amy Winehouse, Brown instead creates a deranged doo-wop and continues to sport her bizarre 60s plate-top hair-do with absolute conviction.

Crying Blood remains the 150-second marvellous mad mess it always was, LEAVE! is as hypnotic as its weird video featuring VV’s head rotating in a box and why on earth Shark In The Water, with its massive soar of a chorus, isn’t blaring out every car stereo up and down the land remains a mystery. L.O.V.E is a raucous slice of rockabilly, Quick Fix a stunner of a skiffle and Game Over has a helluva hook, enough to make a boxer proud, and I fully expect its dramatic drum rolls and trumpeting brass sections to be scoring the exciting bits in reality tv contests in the near future. Elsewhere, Brown shows that she has more subtlety than I thought a girl that uses Nintendo noises in her songs could ever be capable of – Crazy Amazing is a catchy carefree jaunt, Bottles is brilliant slow-burn of a song and the title track is a masterclass in stunning simplicity with Brown’s slippery gold voice all over it (although the less said about the insipid I Love You, the better).

Travelling Like The Light bursts with exuberance and effervescence in an age where an air of nonchalance seems to be norm. Save Vanessa from one of her infamous twitter breakdowns and buy this now.

What's your verdict on VV Brown's album?

The guy in that VV video is so fit. I’m so in love with him that I’ve been known to spend entire afternoons glued to ChartShow TV in the hope that they’ll play the video and I can stare at his epic beauty on the big screen (because youtube embedding mini-ness just doesn’t do it for me). FIT… The song is lovely too. Can’t say I completely agree with this review, though I’ve only gone through the album once so far…

The thing VV has is instant likeability. You just wanna hang out with her and you know you’d have fun. And she has immaculate poise. She’s like the perfect on-the-cusp-of-indie-but-will-probably-never-quite-crossover-either popstar.

But back to the fit video boy. So I’ve spent pretty much all my freetime since first seeing this video a while back searching for a replica of the t-shirt he wears, just so that maybe, just maybe, some of his immense hotness would rub off on me. I finally found it the other week (in Cos, if you’re interested, going for £25 - it has the exact same thin black collar hem and everything). Obsessed much? Maybe…

And here I am commenting again… the track Travelling Like The Light - just hypnotic, beautiful, haunting - how I imagine listening to music in space would sound.

Lol I ♥ you, Amir! I think VV is always gonna be an artist that divides opinion - her style and personality make it unlikely that you’ll be totally indifferent to her. But apparently the album is doing alright in the midweeks - go the VV!

Hat’s off. Well done, as we know that “hard work always pays off”,
after a long struggle with sincere effort it’s done.
