Trend Alert: Lace

Black lace: defintely not the push pineapple, shake a tree kind
One of the hottest trends for this winter is black lace (note: not the band that sang Agadoo), as seen on the likes of Peaches Geldof, Alexa Chung and Mischa Barton. Teentoday.co.uk shows you the best lace pieces, how to wear them and what to avoid.
WHY IT’S HOT: Revealing but not too revealing… Black lace is sexy but classy and yet still romantic, gothic but a bit rock chick and also taps into the craze for all things vintage-looking. A perfect look for winter, it livens up the average LBD.
WHAT TO AVOID: We’re not advocating wearing all these items at once (you don’t want to look like you’ve stepped out of the Moulin Rouge). I’m not a fan of black lace tights either (a bit too burlesque) and steer clear of too much stark white lace, which generally looks cheaper and has too many bridal connotations (go for off-white or cream instead). Since lace is revealing enough, don’t go too low-cut.
HOW TO WEAR IT: ASOS.com has probably got the best and widest range of black lace items this season. Their star item is the dress above (£38), modelled on the ones seen on Peaches and Mischa. It’s stunning, sophisticated and sexy – we love the scalloped hemline and the relatively conservative but oh-so-flattering boat neckline. We also love the lace prom dress from Dorothy Perkins (£40) above – girlie but sexy and perfect for parties.
It’s not just a look for going out though, as shown in the outfits above. We’ve picked out this gorgeous black shirt from ASOS (£25), which is conservative enough for day or work wear but with a sexy cut-out lace back to hint at the sinner within – and there’s plenty more tops in a similar vein on their website. (Btw, lace backs are big – and very very sexy – as this cute shrug from Dorothy Perkins, £25, also shows). Similarly, ASOS’s frothy full black lace skirt (£28) with satin waistband could be dressed down for daytime whilst still staying dead on trend.
If you’re not brave enough to go all out on the lace front, just work the look with accessories like the ones below to stay fashion-forward. Show your goth side with Topshop’s black lace gloves (£10) and showstopper of a lace collar necklace (£12), which will add definite drama to otherwise drab outfits whilst Warehouse’s silk lace corsage headband (£14) should appeal to the more romantic amongst you. ASOS’s lace belt (£10) and Miss Selfridge’s black on gold platforms with lace accents (£40) would add a sexy edge to even a sack of spuds.

Will you be wearing lace this season?
