The return of our lazy fireworks graphic - how we’ve missed you…
You’ve already popped open the first few doors of your Advent calendar, the shops are stuffed with sparkly things and you can’t move for ‘Best Of’ lists in newspapers. It can only mean one thing – Christmas is coming, the end of the year is drawing nigh and Teentoday Towers prepares itself for contributing to ‘Best Of’ overload too. But rather than reading said lists, turning red with rage and shaking your fists to cries of ‘What about* insert artist here *?!?! So-and-so the best of anything?!?! They must be joking!!!’ etc, we’re actually letting you contribute. Click see more to have your say in Teentoday’s Top Singles of 2009.
We’re gonna let you do the shaking fists to our Top Albums list as we’ve kinda already decided those, but with singles we’re not even sure where to start! It’s been a pretty good year for music and our shit or hit sensors have been sent into overdrive by new releases galore. So comment below to suggest your tips for songs of the year – the only rules are that they must have been released as singles and they must have been released in 2009 (well, duh). You might even see your comments in our feature so make them good! We look forward to doing the reading for a change ; )

What are your favourite singles of 2009?
Ashleigh.
So, so many! Not only have there been amazing artists breaking through this year, but so many fantastic comebacks! I think this year has been fantastic for *good* music. Years before have only had a couple of singles that I’ve really, really loved.
I think the song that has defined the year has been Lady Gaga’s Just dance [Okay, so it was released on DECEMBER 29th 2008 - but didn’t chart until ‘09 - so I think it still counts =P]. & I think she brought back that ‘love to hate’ song what you despise at first but then can’t help but sing along to after 6 weeks. & the fact that she’s gone and had another string of hits in succession only proves that she’s a good artist & is only going to improve over time.
Yet, I think that Noisettes have set a good mark for themselves all from a car advert. Don’t Upset The Rhythm was another song that I just loved after channel hopping & watching the Mazda advert that they used it on. Their album didn’t fail to disappoint, neither did their follow up singles. Never Forget You was my Summer Anthem of ‘09.
Muse! How can I forget Muse?! I didn’t think they could top Black Holes from 2005 [I think?] yet, I was so, so amazed when they did. Uprising is just one of those songs with a fantastic base line. Not to mention that interview they did on Italian TV where they were asked to mime & they all switched places was just awesome… Muse DO NOT MIME & for best *live* single of 2009 they have to win. Hands down for me.
Another fantastic song [yeah, I have a lot of them] - Florence & the Machine. It’s so *hippie* that Rabbit Heart was one of those songs I heard & just loved. Soft, melodic. Everything you need to just relax yet it had some brute force behind it. Florence Welch has an amazing voice on her & though probably not the most widely liked singles on the album, it certainly set a mark for them. The cover of You’ve Got The Love is one of my favourite covers ever <3
& then you have the LOVELY Paloma Faith. Paloma beat Pixie Lott hands down for me this year. Stone Cold Sober & then New York. There is no beating this girls talent. She may not have charted as high as Pixie but I think she’s going to be around in the long run, whereas Pixie is likely to just kerplunk. Stone Cold Sober is possibly the only song what I can honestly say I’ve related to in my life. & then you have a polar opposite in New York - that soft ballad, with that rocky edge, what gave me a touch of Christmas in September. [It’s the pretty bells I tell you!] Beautiful songs from an immensely talented lady.
Probably more - but I’ve rambled enough… & probably gone in the polar opposite direction to what you have. [&& is it possible to have the shittiest songs of 2009 aswell? =P]

Ashleigh - you’ve set the bar high for other commenters! What are your shittest 2009 songs?!
Ashleigh.
Cheryl Cole - Fight For this Love, Yeah it’s catchy but I can’t say that the bar has been set very high. I preferred her when she sung on Gary Barlow’s Charity thing with Snow Patrol. She seemed far far more genuine & I found it very easy to listen to. [Not to mention FftL has that awful Kylie circa 2002 outfit going on]
Boom, Boom, Pow - BEP is another one I want to just get rid of. Argh. It drives me nuts now just thinking about that “Boom Boom.... Pow” How it can be called music I don’t know.
Though La Roux & Cascada annoy me I can’t really say they were *awful* singles. Just plain, dead annoying & I really don’t plan to invest anything - time or money - in them. haha
& I won’t comment on the R&B;/Hip Hop/Rap stuff like Dizzee Rascal because I can’t really comment as I don’t have a clue when it comes to music like that… haha. Give me Dusty Springfield, Blondie & Kate Bush any day… [but they aren’t even from this decade, never mind year. Well. Blondie & Kate have released some material but oh well]
Woodsie
I agree with Ashleigh to an exetent, I don’t really enjoy Florence & The Machine, but this year I’ve been addicted to Little Boots’ New in Town and Remedy, JLS have bought back 90s pop but have made it wonderful! Bothe their hits of Beat Again and Everybody in Love are brill! Unfortunatley I think Cheryl Cole will get quite a lot of votes, even though I don’t think her song(s) are any good. But the single of 2009 for me has to be Heart break by Freemasons feat. Sophie Ellis-Bextor. It’s really catachy and always gets me singing along!
Katie
I think the best songs of the year are :
5.Cowboy Cassonova by Carrie Underwood- I really wish Carrie would get more recognition in the UK as she has amazing songs and a an amazing voice! She won American idol a few years back and this song is on her new album. If u like country music u should listen to some of her music!
4.Left My Heart In Tokyo by Mini Viva- This is such an amazing debut single and i cant wait to hear more from the girls!
3.Ignorance by Paramore- Cant belive they were going to split up! this is the song that saved the band so it always been special to me!
2.Halo by Beyonce- Just one of the most beautiful songs ever! Beyonce is such a beautiful person inside and out and its so ahrd nowadays to find someone with everything- Talent(singing, dancing, acting), beauty, charm, likeability and she really cares for her fans!
1.Love Story by Taylor Swift - I am a huge Taylor Swift fan and this is the first ever song i heard of hers! As soon as i heard it i was in love with it and taylor has the most beautiful voice ever. I still cant believe shes only 19!

I’ll throw in my suggestions although they’re highly unlikely to be agreed with across the board. But here it goes anyway.
John Mayer - Who Says. It’s a stoner song. He’s a bit of a stoner. But he writes good music, and can play the guitar immensely.
Kate Miller-Heidke - Last Day On Earth. This song is quite simply beautiful and it allows for the sombre tones of Kate’s voice to be displayed. “It’s the last day on earth, in my dreams. It’s the end of the world and you’ve come back to me” forms the chorus that gained national radio coverage in her home country as it was used in the adverts for the death of a well-known character in Neighbours – how typically Australian. The heartache that is expressed hits you hard, almost forcing you into confronting your own life and your past regrets. < That was a snippet of an album review I wrote. To sum it up simply; it’s amazing!
Taylor Swift - Love Story. This is about as chart-y as I get so felt the need to include it for the chance it could be in the list.
Michael Buble - Haven’t met you yet. Shhh, I love it alright?!
Palome Faith - Stone Cold Sober. I can’t help but singalong loudly and entirely out of tune.
Lenka - The Show. “I’m just a little bit caught in the middle...” You know the one. It’s ubercatchy. And she’s ubersweet.
Lily Allen - 22. It’s not anything amazing. But it’s rather good.
Little Boots is also worth a mention as she’s produced some catchy numbers.
Voila, c’est mon avis.

I also think 2009 as been a great year for music.I actually think Cherryl Coles new song fight for this Love was really good its catchy and its a good song to dance and listen too.I do think that Lady Gagas songs are the most annoying I don’t mind the Pokerface one I thought she sang that quite well but the other songs she as made this year and she have sang this year have been pretty boring and quite slow aswell.I think Pixie Lot as done pretty well this year she as done some amazing songs and I think she is going to make lots more and is going to be an incredible singer in the next few years I just like her voice.I also think Pink! as done well she did so well with the song So what and I liked that Sober she made right at the begining of this year.Black Eyed Peas also have done well I like The Feeling that they sang they sang that song so well.Overall I think Pixie Lot,Pink and Black Eyed Peas have probablly done about the best this year and Girls Aloud have made some great new songs too.
I’m not a big fan of Brittany Spears or Alexandra Burke either so I think they will go into the worst catory this year and Lady Gaga aswell as I have said.
Overall I think this year as been a good year for music eventhough there as been slow, boring and rubbish songs aswell.

The best single for me hands down this year has to be Fight For This Love - Cheryl Cole. The nations sweetheart and a truly amazing artist. She had a lot to live up to after her amazing success with Girls Aloud and she lived up to it and more. Fight For This Love is so catchy and has gorgeous lyrics, which people can really relate to.
My second favorite single of 2009 is to be Three Words by Cheryl Cole. Yes, I know it hasn`t been released yet, but it is a brilliant song. The best song on her album by far.

)
Temper Trap ‘Sweet Disposition’
Biffy Clyro ‘The Captain’

Black Eyed Peas ‘Boom Boom Pow’ (just for the “Will.I.am drop the beat” bit

Jay Sean ‘Down’
Probably have to stick a Dizzee track in there too ‘Dirty Cash’ or ‘Bonkers’

Example ‘Watch the Sun Come Up’
Jordin Sparks ‘Battlefield’
Mumford & Sons ‘Little Lion Man’
Jacob
and I forgot Yeah Yeah Yeahs ‘Zero’
Becky
