Make a Style Statement with Statement Jewellery

Ooooo… sparkly....

Nothing makes you feel better than a bit of bling and in these credit crunch times, we need all the small pleasures we can get.  Lucky for us then, that the shops are pulling out all the stops on the costume jewellery front and helpful souls that we are at teentoday.co.uk, we’re showcasing the best statement necklaces to be found this season.

WHY IT’S HOT: Statement jewellery is a brilliant and easy way to jazz up a potentially boring outfit (especially since the LBD is back in a big way this season) or add new dimensions to an old favourite.  It’s also less worrisome than draping yourself in the irreplaceable family heirlooms and spending your entire evening freaking out about losing or breaking them.

WHAT TO AVOID: Generally, plastic gemstones look faker and cheaper than silver or gold metal.  Don’t throw on statement necklaces, earrings, bangles, rings, cuffs and kitchen sinks all at once unless you want to risk looking like a Christmas tree - less is more!

HOW TO WEAR:  Boho layering of long dangly necklaces is like so last season, instead keep it simple with just one statement necklace.  Look out for different lengths – lots of necklaces this season are collars or shorter in length, to really showcase your neck, and look best against bare skin or unfussy necklines and prints.  But there really is something out there for everyone, as our top picks demonstrate!

(Above, L to R) We’ve seen ASOS’s Short Linked Leaf necklace on loads of people, and it’s looked fab on all of them and at only £6, it’s pretty hard to argue with.

Accessorize has an absolutely gorgeous range of statement necklaces and we’ve picked three of our faves – the Montague Statement necklace (£25) is sure to inject a vein of gothic glamour to any outfit, the Bird Of Paradise necklace looks très classy and much more expensive than its £8 price tag and the Coco Pearl & Chain Statement necklace (£20), with its thrown-together look, has a real vintage charm to it.

(Above, L to R) Marks & Spencer shook off its dowdy image ages ago and has a really wide range of funky necklaces, with well over 100 different styles available on its website.  These three perfectly illustrate the diversity of looks that are out there – the chunky Wooden Interlink necklace (£12) is bold in its ethnic style but understated in colour, the gold Floral Filigree necklace (£29.50) is beautifully-designed and gorgeously ornate (it looks like it could have been in Moulin Rouge!) and the frothy splendour of the Pearl Storm Wide Collar necklace (£12), in this season’s hottest colour purple, would look stunning teamed with a simple outfit.

(Below, L to R) We also love ASOS’s pretty but striking short Gold Flower necklace (£12), the simplicity of Miss Selfridge’s Black Teardrop necklace (£18) and the art-deco styling (another big trend) of their Stone-Set Fan Collar (£15).  At these kind of prices, there really is no excuse - so get slinging on the bling today!

I often wear a silver celtic patterned necklace with a small glass ball that has colours in it - it’s quite pretty.

Wow thanks for that definitely useful post. I just plan to buy some sort of Statement jewellery to my wife as her birthday present. This one is really classic and easy to use. Thanks by the way for those usage tutorials too. I can’t even imagine how beautiful she will be wearing it. Thanks one more time and I will be waiting for more present ideas from you in the nearest future too!
    Regards, Steven Gillson
