RuPaul’s Drag Race - TV shit or hit?

Editor’s note: this is the first article from new recruit Conor <- pop over to his introduction and say hello.
If the botox parade and catty looks of The Real Housewives of New Jersey on Channel 4 weren’t enough for you then RuPaul’s Drag Race on E4 is shimmying towards you with a killer cocktail of “glitter, hairspray and cattiness” (Olly really wanted me to say that, so there you go!)
This is basically America’s Next Top Model meets Project Runway with a bunch of eager drag queens competing for the title of Drag Superstar and some vodka sponsorship of some sort (does anybody watch these things for the prizes? No!) It is definitely a little bit low budget but this only adds to the charm because this is bursting with crazy challenges, strong personalities and a host who’s been there, seen it all and has the big hair to prove it.
Of course where you stand on drag queens affects your view of this show. If you’re used to them you’ll love the references, the attitude and the costumes. If you aren’t this is a peek into a whole other world, in the same way getting to see behind the scenes of pop music was back when reality TV was a new prospect.
The cast are a hilarious mix and the beauty of this show is seeing the competitors in and out of drag, which adds an unusual layer to the proceedings. From Ongina the androgynous and chirpy modern drag queen (who’s now sadly out of the running, but did tweet us) to the Vegas theatrics of Shannell; every kind of glamour is covered.
RuPaul herself is fantastic as the host. Whether appearing out of drag to coach the girls how to make their outfits or appearing in soft focus for the judging panel and dishing out quips by the bucketload you soon see where Tyra was getting it from all these years on Top Model.
Throw in an array of challenges, an elimination process requiring contestants to lipsync for their lives (beat that Heidi Klum!) and constant plugs for new RuPaul music (“My new album is available now on iTunes!” We get it Ru.) this is slick shambolic, entertaining and addictive stuff.
But am I right? Is this just a low budget America’s Next Top Model? Or do these drag queens show Tyra how its done? As ever, leave your comments below please. Oh, and if you’ve not seen it yet, you can watch all the fabulousness of RuPaul’s Drag Race online.

Im not sure about which channel airs it in america i think its Logo and im not aware of their reputation, but here in the UK Drag Race is hosted on one Maybe the biggest channel of england Channel 4.
