Mariah Carey I Want To Know What Love Is shit or hit?

We love the new Mariah Carey song. We hate the new Mariah Carey song. Equal parts rubbish and beautiful, the whole thing has left us feeling a bit confused. And from what we’ve been reading on the interwebs, you lot feel the same too. Hit “see more” to see why, and have your say.

Mariah’s no stranger to covering a track or two and 80s power ballads are somewhat of a personal trademark. Her golden resume includes Open Arms, Bringing on the Heartbreak and Against All Odds. The latest? A cover of the Foreigner classic and teentoday.co.uk favourite I Want To Know What Love Is. So why are we left confused?

Well for every beautifully nuanced note there’s a scratchy yelp, for every muted build up there’s an abrupt ending, for every crisp vocal there’s a dated finger click, and for every moment her tone sounds more beautiful than ever, there’s a cacophony of squeals, whistles and winded belts. And there’s no real drums, just a tinny handclap beat. Sacrilege! In fact, despite the aforementioned low-key build up, everything including the kitchen sink is thrown into the final chorus - whistle notes, belting, squeels, gospel choir - which just feels overwrought and muddy. And then it ends. Suddenly.

It’s obvious that Mariah wants to deliver a vocal from her glory days but doesn’t have the machinery to do it but for the casual listener I Want To Know What Love Is is a return to old-skool 90s balladeer Mariah. You can’t help but think that if she just worked within the confines of her voice, and didn’t try and oversing, the results would be far more rewarding.

Even more confusingly this track has come straight off the back of Obsessed and last year’s Touch My Body - pop ditties with the shelf life of a punnet of strawberries. Who exactly is Mariah trying to appeal to? It’s sad to think Old Mariah’s music would transcend genre (her illustrious career has seen her churn out a series of classics) through sheer quality of the lyrics, melodies and vocals, but recent songs have served more as blemishes on an otherwise perfect school report. Mariah should be writing songs this good, not covering them.

You’re not as old as teentoday.co.uk - so probably many of you have only heard of Mariah as the crazy lady out of the so-bad-it’s-good Glitter and singer of We Belong Together and aren’t quite sure what we’re talking about, or perhaps you’ve spent as many hours as us on youtube investigating her vocal highs and lows, or more likely you don’t give a shit. Either way, let us know what you think… Mariah Carey’s I Want To Know What Love Is - shit or hit?

People keep on putting mariah vs whitney but if you look at the facts she has out performed whitney since she first came out in the 90"s I think it is so Fucking funny that people are trying to put mariah down after she has just delivered one of the best vocal performances of her career and trust me every vocal performance is a phenomenon itself. She hit every note on point and sang in her UPPER REGISTER the HIGHEST register in EXISTINCE EXTRORDINARILLY. I just pray to god that mariah can come through all of these outrageous hypothetical comments and opinions with the biggest selling album and sinles of her career I hope this album puts her on top of the universe, and that she releases all of the songs as singles and each of them are #1"s.GOD PLEASE LET THIS TRUMP THRILLER PHENOMINALLY. AND FOR EVERYONES INFO THIS IS THE ALLTIME BEST BALLAD EVER WEKK UNTIL MC RELEASES ANOTHERONE HAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.HIT HIT HIT HIT HT HIT HIT HIT..................................................................................................................

My answer would be neither. I don’t think it’ll be a hit, and I’m definitely sure it’s not shit. But I do agree with you for the most part. They just went over-the-top with the last part. Although I do find her whistle notes beautiful, there was too much going on there. I wish she did something more like ‘Through the Rain,’ where the last part is simply her belting breathtaking notes without any excessive background noise. And the quality of her voice has definitely deteriorated. It’s really not clear anymore...kinda reminds me of her ‘Hero’ remake. I am really a huge fan of hers, but I expected more--and that’s why I am sorta disappointed.

  • Ken

I absolutely love the song, and think this is one of her best belting songs in quite awhile, which makes the wait for the album well worth it.

  • Dru
    August 29th, 2009

Definitely a hit! It’s her most highly anticipated album of all time too smile I think people don’t understand that we can’t compare her music to today’s! It was a different year and genre, different things were happening in the world back then that made these songs hits so smile It’s all about in the moment I feel!

    Love the cover though! x

i like the song it’s pretty...mariah’s voice is obviously not the same and i do agree she should stick to what she can do and not try and imitate what she used to do. her voice sounds very nasal and she can’t get that low tone but i still think she can outsing most artist now cause she has great range. it’s just hard because we are not comparing her to other singers rather to what she used to be and i don’t think she will ever be the singer she used to be but she can still sing just keep it to the level you can. i still luv mariah but she’s gone trashy and ghetto on us but i will always still buy her CD smile

  • kim
    August 30th, 2009

Not feeling it. It starts off ok but then she goes from singing in full voice to whispering and it sort of messes it up.  At the end of the song, it sounds like she threw everything in except the kitchen sink- too much going on and most of it doesn’t sound good.

    Not a hit

  • Ken
    August 30th, 2009

STRAIGHT UP STANK SHIIIIIIIIIIT! POOR MC JUST AIN’T GOT IT. YOU DON’T OVER SING A CLASSIC SONG AND PUT A GARAGE BAND BEAT TO IT JUST TO SOUND RELEVANT. AAAH DEF SCAM IS MAKING SURE SHE GOES OUT WITH A BANG! EVEN WORSE THEY’RE SETTING HER UP FOR FAILURE WHEN SHE SINGS LIVE. SHE’LL BE CRITICIZED IF SHE LIP SYNCS AND CRITICIZED WHEN SHE SINGS LIVE B/C SHE WON’T PULL THIS OFF. THIS IS NOT I REPEAT NOT A SONG I WANT TO HEAR ON THE RADIO. MC NEEDS TO HURRY UP, PUT THIS ALBUM OUT AND TAKE A LONG AZZ BREAK FROM MUSIC! SHE’S DESTROYING A REPUTABLE CAREER SHE’S BUILT FROM THE 90’S.

  • Brandon
    August 30th, 2009

Wow. Oddly enough, I started out thinking I wasn’t going to like it. The first 30 seconds resemble a music boxing playing and the last thing I want to remember is “Through The Rain” or “Charmbraclet.” I will, however, say I’m pleasantly surprised. Her vocals were light and airy, yet emotional and thorough towards the end. I wouldn’t change a thing. Her 19th number 1? Maybe...it’s hard to say. I can’t imagine hearing it on the same station that routinely plays Rihanna or Pitbull, which would seem to alienate her key “teen demographic,” but I’ve not doubt it’ll be a big hit on Top 40, which made such hits like “How Do I Live,” from Leann Rhymes, a huge number 1. Delaying your album release so you could add additional tracks like this one? Mariah, I’m not mad at you.

I love this song, it’s gonna be huge! seriously. let’s take it to NO.1 lambs!! i’ve been a fan of Mariah Carey, ever since i was born which was on 1990. lmao. so basically i grew up on Mariah Carey’s Music! and she never lets me down. the song is so uplifting and i hope it’s gonna be a lil’ longer on her album! and also Obsessed sits pretty at No. 11. all we need is a lil’ boost and bam Obsessed could top the charts next week! plus it went gold already!! i will always support MC, no matter what. Love ya MiMi!!!

    August 30th, 2009

Very impressed. Mariah’s vocals gave me goosebumps. Obviously, if know music, you know when you want to emphasize a note it would be a vocal high and less emphasis, a low. Anyway, one has to listen to any remake with an open mind. If your’re hearing Foreigner’s original version in the back of your mind while playing Mariah’s take, you are going to be disappointed, because Mariah is not Foreigner.

    August 30th, 2009

wow, I honestly wasn’t expecting this. I think ppl have become way to critical about her, and then again they have ALWAYS been critical about her ever since she became famous. Despite everything ppl says about her voice, her career, or the “competition” against ms houston ..etc etc.., I can hear it has an honest heart, true emotion or whatever you want to call it, its obviously there. and thats what really counts. I can now say that ms carey has made me feel this song for the first time. and yeah it probably doesn’t sound too radio friendly with today’s shity pop/ r&b;radio playlists (for me her last # 1 didn’t either) and I wouldnt be surprised to see it become a # 1 like I was when I heard that “touch my body” became a # 1, hahaha. I really liked this song, I would actually pay for it, and I might actually request to hear it on a radio station only couse I want to hear it again and again. peace and good job ms carey

I love Mariah Carey and i must say i’m like OBSESSED with her. when i heard she’s having a remake of “I Wanna Know What Love Is”, i right away have to dig it up over my Limewire. then i heard it. i must say it’s good. but it lacks power and that signatured regality of a Mariah Carey diva. i love Mariah Carey but if i would be asked to rate this song from 1 to 10, i’d show up a 6. I’m sorry, but personally, the most amazing remakes she made were “Without You” and “Against All Odds”. Oh i love her “Open Arms” too. But then I still bow at her.

    Peace Out!

ok, not sure what song you were listening to, but every note sung here was heartfelt, that allows the emotion from the lyrics to evoke through to the listener which it did, criticism (not constructive) like yours really just takes away from the talent that has given us countless hits and a vocal range unmatched and reminiscent of (Minnie) another amazing voice. i think MC did this song justice from an arrangement point of view and delivered in the vocal and emotionality. gotta give props where its due.. Standing O

    August 30th, 2009

It took a few listens but enjoying it now. Reminds me of her 90s formula but not quite the full execution.

Start - Sometimes she drives me nuts when she moves from full voice to whisper in the same line. Belt it all out or whisper the whole thing - stop mucking around. Still, the first verse is awesome control and the chorus is ok.

Middle - Great lead vocals but her backing vocals are usually a lot tighter and calculated than this. Mariah missed a great chance at showing how she can really layer her own vocals to provide a really full sound. Especially to pay homage to the original. This is the oddest chorus note change I’ve ever heard Mariah do before. It seemed unnatural to me. She’s done it so well before (think “Can’t Let Go” or “Always Be My Baby").

End - I get sad when I hear her voice screech at the beginning of her belting out. Her voice never used to sound strained in the early 90s. The choir was a great addition, a la “Anythime You Need A Friend” but the belting and whistles all get lost amongst each other. Still got great control over those mammoth high notes though - the highest I’ve heard in a while.

Verdict - Still a HIT as it is better than any other version these Disney/Reality producers churn out. But that’s just it - is it aimed at the same audience? Every now and then you put your faith in your music and just let it be. I doubt she’s targeting the younger demographic here but as someone else mentioned it is still likely to end up appearing on many an Idol / X Factor comp in the future…

    August 30th, 2009

it is definately a hit. it brings my mind back to the old mariah but not completely, she still has some mimi in there smile
she made it so damn emotional, like she was actually going through the whole thing and by the end she got a hell of a lot stronger from the experience.
the added choir is just beautiful. fly like a bird/anytime u need a friend style. it’s just amazing how she takes a song that one generation really appreciated and resurected it in a way that is still respectful to the original but this generation will enjoy it. and that’s who mariah is.
    BEAUTIFUL!!!<3

It’s certainly not Vision of Love, or the ‘Vision of Love’ ballad I was expecting it to be. I’ve got to admit, I like it, I don’t love it. It envokes emotion in me which I guess is what it’s supposed to do. However, something just doesn’t sound right. Her voice sounds so different from Vision of Love, which it obviously would, all these years later, but it even sounds different from ballads on her last album like I Stay in Love or Bye Bye. I actually like the whispering in this song, because I can feel the heartbreak and emotion. This is the type of song Mariah should be writing, instead of her other songs with bad grammar and spelling mistakes. This is a mature Mariah which is something I like. She can’t hold notes the same way anymore though. I love the piano introduction, that’s absolutely beautiful, but the final chorus with the choir drives me crazy, it’s just far too much, I’d rather do without the choir to be honest. And for those that claim she doesn’t squeek or squeel, I’m afraid she does. I don’t find it such an issue, because I like songs which are unpolished and imperfect. That way when you see someone live you won’t be disappointed.
I’m really looking forward to this album because I believe that it will be her most personal, particularly since Butterfly. Perhaps it won’t perform miraculously, but I believe that she’s written it for her fans. I’m just not sure what to expect since this is such a big step away from Obsessed. I wish that she’d released H.A.T.E.U or something because I believe that would have done well, and I have a feeling that song is going to be amazing.

I think Mariah Carey’s Version Is Absolutely Stunning, It Begins Like A Lullaby, So Soft And Pretty, Mariah Starts Off So Low, Then Totally Belting Out. She’s 100% The Greatest Vocalist Alive Right Now, And I Respect Her Very Much. I think that it’s a very nice cover. At least better than her recent songs with dumb lyrics and no real note. Her past few songs have just been disappointments for me. I’ve been a fan of Mariah since I was 9 and now I’m 22 and I’ve known her as this amazing songwriter with vocal chords that are not of a human but what’s happening to her voice recently really made me feel sad.

With this cover, I can see that she definitely tried to bring back the luster that her older songs had and still have but this cover definitely does not match any of her songs in the 90s.

Still below my expectations but enough to make me happy as a Mariah fan. I just want her to REST for a longer period of time so she can possibly regain some of that golden voice she had back then and then record another jaw-dropping diva album just like old times.

Mariah carey cannot sing! I have had to listen to the screeching howls since she came onto the scene in the early 90’s. She has an extensive vocal range , but little else. I am tired of her and her “supposed” hits, none of them are real. I hate that she has done this to a really great song, what a shame.

Some people are just haters! Mariah is fierce and always will be. Nobody else could even attempt this and get away with it! I love it!

It sounds like something an American Idol reject might attempt to sing.  It’s all just a hodge-podge of different sounds that does not fit together at all.  I would be totally ashamed for anyone to hear this noise, hell I am ashamed for her, LOL!!!  Her album has been pushed back twice and her shingle “OBSESSED” has not done very well at all and she has cancelled appearances lately.  Hmmmmmm, sounds like problems......

Billboard Hot 100 Airplay as of 08/29/09- “Obsessed” at #7 (+4.3 million audience impressions)- has sold more than 500K of singles and downloads…

Mariah has touchdown with this one, revived the classic and made her own, I have a feeling Memoirs is going to be bigger than E=MC2...MiMi sure knows how to make a buzz around her...Mariah’s powerful gospel-tinged new single, “I Want to Know What Love Is,” a revival of Foreigner’s 1984 hit tells everyone to shut up!

And, since all three artists are also currently charting with new singles, let’s look at the digital sales of each title to date:

    Mariah Carey, “Obsessed”: 526,000
    Madonna, “Celebration”: 64,000
Whitney Houston, “I Look to You”: 32,000

With that in mind, here are the singles sales totals for each artist. Nielsen SoundScan separates totals for physical singles from digital tracks, so we’ll present the sums of both configurations:

    Physical singles:
    17,172,000, Mariah Carey
    14,744,000, Whitney Houston
    10,554,000, Madonna

    Digital tracks:
    11,120,000, Mariah Carey
    10,307,000, Madonna
    3,320,000, Whitney Houston

“I want to know what love is
I want you to show me
I want to feel what love is
I know you can show me”

MADONNA’S new double disc release will kick mariah’s ass in worldwide sales totals.  mariah scarey may sell more in the US but not worldwide.  This remake is a complete bunch of noise just like most everything else she tries to sing.  Foreigner should sue her for ruining an awesome song.

TRASH, TRASH, TRASH.  There’s more to this story than the album not being finished yet.  Why cancel all tv appearances, Hollywood walk of fame appearance, performances?  Something going on in mariahland.  The album is a total FLOP and they know it.  Talk is all over the internet about the not-so-great reviews at the listening party for her new cd, the quality of the songs, etc.  She needs to be worried cause it’s f--king NOISE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love it!  Mariah never disappoints!  For all of you who wanted OLD Mariah back, well this is it!  But yet I still hear people complaining.  NO ONE can sing like Mariah!  She is truly one of a kind and there will never ever be one like her!  I love this cover and hope it does good on radio!

This song will officially kill Mariah Carey career. Her new number 1 hit? You gotta be kidding me. I doubt she can break The Beatles’s record. People are sick of listening and reading about Mariah Carey this, Mariah Carey that. She is fat, irritating, whiny and behave like a teenager. In fact she kinda reminds me of my aunt; always embarassing herself by trying to act cute in her 40s. Mariah do us a favour. Get out of the limelight for a while. Make us miss you. Then return with another album called The Evaporation of Mimi. Why she would called her album that? Coz no radio is ever going to play anyone above 40!! Say Hasta La Vista Mariah!

HIT! One of the BEST VOCALS I have heard in years from her or nearly anybody else! She outdid Foreigner! She outdid herself! She’s incredible!

Its very unfortunate that Mariah’s record company is taking this path. It is quite apparent that Mariah’s voice is not in any shape to sing this live. So the option will be lipsynch or sound like shit and apologize. Additionally for the last 10yrs Mariah has attempted to appeal to a younger audience with her hip-hop infused drivel. Now she is being asked to be taken seriously as a singer. Her problem will be radio cuz the stations that play obssesed are not to play this out the box and AC has strayed away from Mariah for years as she all but abandoned music for that format. She needs to take a long break. This is not shit, that would be TMB or Obsessed, but it will not be a hit. But I wish her luck either way. She was once a good singer.

This is one of my fav classic, Mariah did it brilliantly! *applauds…

I don’t get the stuff some people “commented” as above- “trash?-pariah? who is this “Me”? sounds like has issues with Mariah..needs to get a life! seriously...I doubt ur comments do not make any significance, as the track is great no doubt about it! Mariah looks great, oneself can be whateva they want to be as long as they are confident and are comfortable with one’s body…
Most of artiste nowdays dont even look good as Mariah does...(luv her curvacious bod) I wish i had her bod....

Mariah does have talent and I strongly believe this new single and her new album are bound to be #1 (enuf said!) 2 bad so sad ..if u cant enjoy it ...then jus shut it!

Really, after people have been trashing Mariah’s voice online through reviews and comments, I was surprised at the support she received here. I really feel like this will become another “I’ll Be There” where the younger generation assume its a song by Mariah Carey.

Im excited to see this at #1, she deserves it. Im glad she didnt over do the belting because I don’t want to see her get bashed for a sucky live performance. Always gonna love you Mariah.

She can’t sing anymore. Why does she keep up with the whispering? I think her vocals are damaged.

It’s also lame singing this song. I just heard the Wynonna Judd remake from a year or two ago and she sings it much better.

    Mariah is ovah.
