Lady Gaga - Bad Romance: shit or hit?

Although Lady Gaga’s newest single Bad Romance, taken from the forthcoming re-issue of The Fame album (entitled The Fame Monster, out November 23), has been around for a while, we knew you teentoday.co.uk readers wouldn’t be satisfied with some crappy LQ rips from an Alexander McQueen catwalk show (where it received its premier). So now we have the HQ version in all its glory – but it’s still up to you, as ever, to decide whether it’s shit or hit…
In his comment on Rihanna’s Russian Roulette, Olly stated that Bad Romance was ‘a rehash of Gaga’s last two (admittedly fantastic) singles, without ever reaching their dizzying heights’. In a scandal that might cause fisticuffs at dawn at Teentoday towers, I disagree. Bad Romance has all the key components that made The Fame one of our albums of 2008 – completely instantly catchy with a killer chorus, stomping beats and RedOne’s pounding production – whilst marking a progression from those songs. It’s a little darker and a lot more theatrical but is still unmistakably and uniquely Gaga; who else would start a track doing a tiger impression (‘rah rah rrrah rrrrah rrrah’) to an almost circus-type melody, before launching into lyrics about wanting ‘your ugly’ and ‘your disease’ and encompassing a breakdown in French along the way. Every now and then, Gaga likes to remind us she can sing and boy does she go for it here – vaguely menacing, sometimes sweet but always fearless – Gaga ooh la la indeed.
Coupled with the striking cover art, a mooted eight brand spanking new tracks (so put that in your pipe and smoke it, Alesha ‘only four new tracks’ Dixon) and somehow it’s looking as if the tail end of The Fame campaign might be the most interesting part. We’ll tell you more about the re-release in a later post (including our review of another leaked track, Alejandro) but let’s hope we get some videos/performances as epic as Gaga’s recent stupendously outrageous but outstanding number at the VMAs.
Every time we write Gaga off as some publicity-hungry bizarrely-dressed annoyance who’s never out of the press, we return to the music and are reminded why we fell in love with her in the first place. Basically, she knows her way round a cracking tune. Bad Romance is no exception.

Actually I agree with what you said. It’s trademark gaga with colossal chorus, a fizz of energy and bucket loads of moments from The Big Book Of Crazy . Maybe I’m feeling a bit deflated simply because this sound is so familiar, so GaGa that it doesn’t have the impact of her original launch when we used to rant on about her to the uninitiated.
Despite never being dull, I guess in many ways Bad Romance was very expected in feel, approach and even styling. I wonder if she just turned up in a pair of jeans and a tee shirt I’d have been more surprised.
That said, she doesn’t do things by halves does she?

The song is really great, hence why Mr Alexander McQueen used it for his Paris fashion week finale. HIT. Possibly even bigger than Poker Face.

I can’t believe I’m saying this but, HIT! I don’t tend to like Lady Gaga songs but this one is finally different! Unlike Poker Face and Just Dance, they sound very similar, Paparazi was alright after the first time you heard it, any time after that and I wanted to switch off, but this is different, I really like this one, possibly her best yet! xD

Absolutely love this!
It has everything, a slick modern piece of pop mastery crossed with all out crazyness. From the dirty drawl of Gaga’s verses into the epic chorus it’s fantastic. It’s even got that Madonna style ‘talky’ bit.
My God though, that chorus, simply divine, the melody to it is just ‘perfect’. It’s even got a Coldplay style ‘ooo-ooo-oohh’ singalong chant to it.
Yes, it has similarities to past Gaga songs, but for me anyways, i’m not tired of it yet, chiefly because it sounds so damn good. I read in another review about this sounding best as the soundtrack to fashion shows and they’ve got a point there, it’s that capturing of modern culture in sound form that Gaga does so well.
And then there’s the middle-eight bit where she starts singing in French and it all goes a bit crazy, quite scary actually. You don’t really get this from anyone else and for that reason this is win, win, win in every way.

The song is ok I guess, but I feel like it’s a bit too calculated. I get the feeling that Lady Gaga is trying to play the “crazy” card a bit too much, the tiger impression “rah rah...” is not really necessary. It’s ok, but it does not exactly “wow” me.
