Lady Gaga - Alejandro + The Fame Monster news

We promised you a review of another leaked Lady Gaga track, Alejandro, in our review of Bad Romance. We’re now making good on that promise. That’s about it really.
Short review: Alejandro is brilliant. Longer review: In a probably better than Bad Romance type way. If Bad Romance was exactly the type of new song you expected Gaga to unleash on us, than Alejandro is a little less expected but still as instantaneously incredible. It’s got a more midtempo vibe, but with the buzzy RedOne beats still very much in evidence. Coupled with a Spanish/Italian accent (someone please tell us which) Gaga puts on and some European percussion elements, it sounds like what would happen if Shakira discovered electro. Except that’s already happened on She Wolf and errr… it sounded nothing like Alejandro, but you get the idea. An air of wistfulness and longing plus dark disco stylings and some gorgeous talky bits makes for a fantastic pop record. Yet again, Gaga does not disappoint.
It’s another of the eight new tracks that comprises her re-issue of The Fame, now called The Fame Monster and out on November 23 (complete with striking cover art and super-deluxe version that apparently includes a lock of Gaga’s hair – only Gaga, eh?!). For most artists, re-release basically equals quick cash-in with charity single/track they sing three words on guest-vocal for/ropey song that wasn’t good enough to make the album in the first place attached. For Gaga, it’s a chance to explore the various ‘monsters’ she encountered during the past year – ‘my Fear of Sex Monster, my Fear of Alcohol Monster, my Fear of Love Monster, my Fear of Loneliness Monster… each represented by a different song on the new record’. From most artists, you’d dismiss this as absolute garbage fed to them by some long-suffering, caffeine-addled PR; from Gaga, you actually believe in it.
The eight tracks include four RedOne numbers (including Bad Romance and Alejandro – well, if it ain’t broke…), a Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jenkins track called Telephone that apparently features a guest-vocal from Beyonce of all people and a tantalisingly-titled Teeth, produced by veteran Teddy Riley. More intriguingly, there is also a ballad dedicated to her father called Speechless. Ballads have typically never been Gaga’s strongest suit – in my opinion, because the Gaga persona is too brassy and confident to pull off the vulnerability and emotion that makes a slowie more than the sums of its part (her best non-uptempo remains one that she is merely on backing vocals for – Quicksand, a beautiful Britney bonus track) but I hope the more personal subject matter might mean we finally get a Gaga ballad of merit.
You’ll be the first to hear once we’ve heard it but for now, we’re just living in anxious anticipation like the rest of you. Bring The Fame Monster on!

That accent is strange. Whilst the intro sounds more Italian, the pronunciation of “Alejandro” sounds far more Spanish. She needs to sort her accents out!
The song itself is repetitive with the chorus, although this seems to work for GaGa so I guess there’s no reason for her to change her ways. I can see it becoming another annoyingly infectious tune that I shall hum endlessly.
Overall, I quite like it. Nothing mindblowing. But catchy.

There’s a reference to Mexico. And Alessandro would be the Italian equivalent of the Spanish Alejandro.

It’s a Swedish accent, a la ABBA, trying to sound Latin. Excellent! The whole song is a sort of tribute to ABBA. I haven’t liked anything this much since ABBA, actually.
