Gothic style - an introduction from Lucie Dolly Rocker

She’s one-third of Britain’s most obnoxious girl group, longstanding friend of teentoday.co.uk and now the newest addition to our supremely passionate ranty and some-would-say talented writing team… it’s Lucie Kay. Though not a fan of full stops and apostrophes (and her shift button was obviously busted as there wasn’t ONE SINGLE capitalised word throughout this piece up to 20mins ago) Lucie’s love of great music and quirky sense of style (plus the fact she’s always up for sharing a bottle of cheap white wine) makes her a firm favourite with the rest of the teentoday.co.uk team. Oh, and whilst other teen sites, who shall remain nameless, appear to struggle to pull together a single article with substance, we’ve roped in top 46 chart acts to write for us. How amazing is that? Hit “see more” for Lucie’s introduction to Gothic style, and a whole load of too-much-information about teentoday.co.uk’s nights on the town.

Well hello there teentoday.co.uk readers. I’m very excited to be writing my first of many pieces as your new style writer. The idea came during one of mine and Olly’s (now known as Lolly’s) many alcohol-fueled 2 hour (20 Marlborough light) deep chats about nothing, which usually consist of Olly telling me (through the motion of song and dance) how his website needs a shake up, or his life is over, and he will have to steal his dinner from service stations (IT WAS ONE TIME - Olly)… this also led to the idea of teentoday.co.uk the musical. Being the good friend I am, and having the obsession with fashion I do, I suggested I start writing for the style section of teentoday.co.uk. Now usually master plans made under the influence are forgotten by morning, but this particular one I was very excited about! So here it is.

Goth Chic A/W
Although my fellow Dolly Rockers are reminding me (also know as taking the piss) daily that i’m morphing into a Tim Burton figurine/extra from the Adams Family, I am loving the goth look this A/W.  Make up: The key is not to take it too far and end up looking like Newt and his mate from Hollyoaks. My tips are: darken the hair colour (I have gone a plum red colour), keep fake tan on the reduced rack at Savers where it belongs, and keep skin fair. Go for a deep red lipstick and stay away from pinks (see teentoday.co.uk’s guide to getting the plum lips look). Barry M do an amazing plum red lipstick. Heres a pic of me with my new hair and a few gothic catwalk looks.

High Street Goth:
I must admit I usually run into Topshop with oversized sunglasses and a balaclava because a part of me feels ashamed for shopping there. I might seem like a huge style snob but I just had this feeling I would walk down a street and every girl would be wearing the same outfit as me… but this season they have turned me! I think they seemed to just ‘get’ this look a lot more than all the other high street stores and they have managed not to confuse gothic with punk - which are two very different looks - and this is where a lot of high street stores have slipped up. I’m mostly loving their velvet pieces, ‘BOO’ t-shirts and Christopher Kane Shoes (note: shoes not clothes - the Topshop/Kane clothes in my opinion are not so good).

High Fashion Goth:
Gareth Pugh is a one of the designers who managed to bring the goth look back this year… although he has been doing it for a very long time. My obsession with Pugh started before I joined the Dolly Rockers - I worked with him putting together one of his biggest shows. He refuses to use colour and swore that Doc Martins would be back in mainstream fashion in about 2 years. I thought he was crazy, but now they’re a trademark part of my Dolly Rocker look. Here is Mr Pugh and one of his fabulous outfits, and Miss Gaga wearing Pugh’s Origami Jacket.

imageCeleb Goth:
Though she looks as though shes on her way to a Halloween party, Alice Dellal pulls off the Gothic look very very well. She’s been my personal style icon for a long time. The point of this paragraph? I just want to introduce you to how fabulous she is!

So that’s my introduction to the Gothic look. I hope it inspires you to try your own take on the style and see if you can make it work for you. Let me know how you get on in the comments.

What do you think of gothic style? (and banter Lucie below...)
