Golden Globes Style: Cool or Fool special

Yes, this is late as the Golden Globes were about two weeks ago. But it’s never too late to look at lots of pretty dresses and/or stars making fools out of themselves with their style choices. Here’s our rundown of the best, worst and everything in-between on the night.

Jennifer Aniston – Valentino

Criticised by some for being yet another boring black dress, we frankly couldn’t be happier with Jen’s sartorial choice. Sometimes the old clichés ring true and this time the one is: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The thigh-high slit and one-shouldered detail add beautiful quirks to the timeless class of this dress, whilst Jen’s tan and tousled hair are just right. One look at some of the other style duds on these pages should show you just why the power of an LBD should never be underestimated.

Emily Blunt – Dolce & Gabbana

Emily Blunt’s outfit is a bit of a mixed bag. I love the cut and shape and the floaty flounces and frills are gorgeous yet the colour doesn’t sit well with Blunt’s Strictly Come Dancing day-glo tan – or indeed, the English rose pallor of her face. Bizarre.

Fergie – Elie Saab

Right dress, wrong person. This cornflower-blue number is the stuff that little girls’ dreams are made of, but on Fergie Ferg?! Admittedly, she would never have strutted the red carpet in her Crazy Frog BEP goggles (though we’d have paid good money to see it if she had), yet we were hoping for an outfit with a bit more glam edge from one of pop’s resident loons. The monotone raven locks are not so hot either.

Julianne Moore

As yet, no designer has owned up to this. And you can see why. It makes Moore’s breasts look non-existent (flatter than Keira Knightley is really saying something!) whilst her hips overcompensate wildly, all done in cheap Matalan-suit grey. To add insult to injury, it looks as if she stuck a draught excluder round her chest. Great shoes could have lessened the horror – but instead, these clunky sandals drag it down further. Urgh.

Kate Hudson – Marchesa

This is almost a definite cool – I love the pure white and the structure in a night of flounces, ruffles and slinky draping. But it’s unfortunate that one of Kate’s most recent films was Bride Wars, result being she looks like she’s stepped straight off set (the train, which she spent most of the night holding up, doesn’t help). And stuffed some feathers down her top. To be fair, in this picture, she looks almost as surprised about it as we are.

Lea Michele – Oscar de la Renta

Of course, we had to mention Glee (winner of Best Comedy) somewhere and just seeing Rachel (sorry, Lea Michele) walk – alas, not sing and dance her way down – the red carpet made our hearts soar. This Oscar de la Renta frock is big, dramatic and romantic – and we expect Rachel would be proud. Meanwhile, the emerald green gown Michele sported to the SAGs is too stunning to not get a mention and shows we may just have the makings of a stylista.

Anna Paquin – Stella McCartney

Now *this* is what red carpet dressing should be all about. Spangles, sparkles, sequins. And boobs. We’re not advocating Meryl Streep or Judi Dench step out in this ensemble come Oscar time but for True Blood starlet Paquin, it’s youthful, exuberant and a glittery two fingers up to conservative red carpet dressing. For my money, it could have done with having a couple more inches hacked off the bottom and the shoes DO NOT GO. Best accessory of the night – fit vampire to hold your umbrella. There are some things money (and Mastercard) can’t buy (and doesn’t it seem a long time since she was releasing ducklings into the wild in Fly Away Home)…

Diane Kruger – Christian Lacroix

If you need further proof why Aniston was clever to stick to what she knows, step forward Kruger. Usually a no-brainer for the best-dressed list, Diane must have been overcome with sympathy for Christian Lacroix’s financial woes (the fashion house filed for bankruptcy last year) and thus been blinded to the garish horror of this dress. The flowery flounces and putrid colour are just plain ugly and the cut is oddly frumpy. Unpleasant.

Drew Barrymore – Atelier Versace

The best thing about this Atelier Versace dress is the glitter. Sadly, that’s a very small part of the dress. The colour makes Drew look naked; we know she’s not naked because we can see her bra and VPL. I’m not sure which option is preferable. The glittery growths sprouting from her hip and shoulder look like some sort of fungus. Let’s hope they aren’t poisonous.

Marion Cotillard – Dior

Finally, an all-out hit. Cotillard’s fast becoming the one to pull focus at these awards bashes – she has her own unique style, stays true to the brand that she’s ambassador for and manages to pull off classic whilst still looking youthful. I adore all the origami-esque pleats to this classy Dior and there’s the on-trend one-shoulder and thigh-high slit (see Aniston). The deep jade colour is intoxicating and Cotillard’s quiff keeps it fresh. OK, the peek of lacy garter veers dangerously towards ‘Allo ‘Allo French maid territory – but hey, her Gallic charm means she just about gets away with it. Oooh la la indeed.

Sandra Bullock – Bottega Veneta

Possibly my favourite outfit of the night, purely because I love the colour. It’s purple, it’s shimmery, I think I used to own one just like it for my Barbie.

I LOVE Emily Blunt’s dress but you’re right - what the hell is going on with her mix and match skin colour?! Just weird. Julianne Moore looks a mess which is a shame because she usually gets it so right. I don’t like Kate Hudson’s dress at all! I just don’t think she can pull of the dress. The Oscar de la Renta dress is gorgeous although is verging slightly on looking like one of those freaky doll things that you put over loo roll. The colour of Diane Kruger’s dress is gorgeous too but that’s about all I like about it, she looks awful. Have to say that I really don’t like Marion Cottilard’s dress, the lace/split combo is so trashy looking, although the top part is pretty. I love Sandra Bullock’s hair and makeup - very pretty - the colour of her dress is indeed gorgeous, but I think it looks too much like a bad prom dress. I would say my favourite has got to be Anna Paquin, LOVE me some sequins, so sparkly and glamorous, which is what these award shows are supposed to be like! Although I agree about the shoes, what was she thinking there?!

Jenifer Aniston gets it bang on - Black, yes, but the slit keeps it sexy and mixes it up a bit, her hair is the perfect side of tousled and she looks amazing. I love Sandra Bullock’s dress, mainly because of the colour, but the material isn’t the best. Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta is one of my favourites, yes it’s big, but perfect for such a big event, something a bit different, but keeping it classic with black. She looks gorgeous. Marion Cotillard unfortunately for me gets it all wrong - the colour is great, but the cut isn’t flattering and the black lace makes it looks trashly and unfinished. I love the sparkles of Anna Paquins dress, but the cut and shape does her no favours and the shoes are quite frankly, disgusting.I really like Fergie’s Ellie Saab number, but I’ve got the inkling it would look better on a bridesmaid.

Jennifer Aniston looks the best for sure, then i’d say Emily Blunt. Most of the others just seem so wrong! Nasty colours and unflattering.
