The Dolly Rockers caught live

Amsterdam sex show. The Dolly Rockers live.
The electroqueer showcase and club night at The Underbelly in London’s Hoxton Square brings together the best of new electronic music to an eager crowd of tanked up gays. After our declarations of love last week, we decided to watch the Dolly Rockers live - and see if their personal brand of drunk disco and shambolic performance worked live - and we were not disappointed.
The problem with live showcases like this - and we’ve been to a lot of them - is they can actually be awkward to watch. Stood 2 feet away from some desperate wannabes teetering on the edge of the D-list, and desperate to prove themselves with unknown songs, it’s hard to feel enchanted, surprised, or even mildly impressed - after all, when you can see every split end, spot and hear every bum note - you’ve only your raw talent to save you.
Occasionally though an act or performance has enough razzle-dazzle to transcend the low-rent venue and lackluster, disinterested crowd and just delivers a bloody good set of live songs with sass, balls and a sense of confidence - whilst seemingly having the time of their lives. This is exactly what the Dolly Rockers did on Saturday.
Looking like they’d done five rounds with a jumble sale, and smeared in make-up, the girls took the stage at around 11 and performed 4 songs from their album sampler. Champagne Shirley, Je Suis Un Dolly, first single proper Gold Digger and teentoday.co.uk favourite and the night’s highlight How Did I End Up With You. The latter, with it’s sweeping monster chorus and funny talky voiceover sounding even more epic after a few too many double vodkas.
Yes, their stage performance had the finesse of a school play, their dance moves as awkward as an elephant in stilettos and their fantastic lack of media training meant their call outs teetered on deeply offensive, but whilst other lesser groups would’ve crumbled - it all added to The Dollies’ haphazard charm.
Forget the shimmery sheen and high-gloss of Girls Can’t Catch - if teentoday.co.uk was a girl group we’d be The Dollies. Their ascent to super stardom now seems inevitable - so take this opportunity to see them at the usual London haunts whilst you still can. And remember, we told you about them first.
Here’s some videos from the night - you can hear teentoday.co.uk woop after one rather interesting comment at about 0.30.
