Cheryl Cole’s debut solo single Fight For This Love - shit or hit?

If the aim of the debut solo effort from Cheryl Cole was to make a perfectly pleasant track that you, your mum, your next door neighbour and the postie would *quite* like, whilst slowly shifting her away from the sound that made her fortune, then it’s a complete success. The problem is, who exactly is going to *love* Fight For This Love?

When she’s not busy being the Nation’s sweetheart, Cheryl Cole has a first job as popstar extraordinaire. And her rather impressive group work as one-fifth of teentoday.co.uk’s favourite pop powerhouse is now being supplemented with a solo effort. In other words? Chezzer’s gone and recorded her own track Fight For This Love.

So what’s it like? We’re in a good mood today so let’s start with the positive - it’s totally inoffensive diet RnB, tightly paced and with all the right bells and whistles. It has a great middle 8 and a repeated chorus that will lodge itself in your head in an instant, and refuse to budge. The production is as warm and polished as Cheryl’s X-factor stage persona. Oh, and it sounds a bit like Kelis’ Lil Star. Infact, if we had a tenner, we’d take a punt on Fight For This Love topping the charts, no doubt embraced by radio and the masses thanks to blanket media coverage and Cheryl’s weekly primetime window into our livingrooms.

The bad? Well first things first: who the hell is singing this song? It sounds so autotuned and manipulated, and vocally so muddy that we can’t be quite be sure if it’s Cheryl’s voice recorded on a dictaphone, or someone else altogether. In fact the vocals are as whitewashed and edited as the bizarre publicity photo above - stuck through the pop processor of mediocrity so that the end result only bears a vague resemblance to the Cheryl we all know and love. The whole project at the moment feels muddled and rushed. For a girl who has been part of pop moments as inventive as Sound of the Underground and Sexy! No No No, we expected better. We can imagine the suits at the record label now Well we can’t make anything too interesting, we might scare the housewives. Lovely Hobnobs by the way.. In other words a missed opportunity that’s left us feeling sad :-(.

At teentoday.co.uk we’re lovers of obnoxious and brash pop music that isn’t overly polished and soulless so Fight For This Love isn’t likely to setup shop in our top 10 most played iPod tunes. We want to say it’s offensive in it’s safety, but it’s not that bad, it’s just not that good. C+ Cheryl. Could do better. See us after class.

But enough about what teentoday.co.uk thinks, have your say below, Fight For This Love shit or hit?

Very good review, the song isn’t very good smile

Her voice is just weak, and they tried to mask it with cheap tricks!

It is good, it’s just a grower, with promotion and radio plays and when the video comes out everyone will love it. I’ve listened to it about 20 times today and it’s really addictive, i can’t stop listening to it!

Put it this way, she WILL be compared to VB and let’s be honest, even if you don’t like FFTL it IS much better than Victoria’s solo work.

So, give it some time, soon enough everyone will be sining “we gotta fight fight fight fght fight for this love”

Oh Dear-what a waste of time -it seems like this was a rushed job to try and capitalize on X-factor-she cannot sing and the song is dire. I think she is trying to compete with Alexandra Burke.I am sure she will not be singing live at all-it does not help that Leona also has revealved her new song Happy which is 100 times better than this rubbish.

I love the song i think its amazing
The only reason i think people are slating it is because it is something different to what she has done before.
Her vocals are going to sound different she wanted to challenge herself and for the fist time you havent got five different voices on one track so she had a chance to express her voice in ways people didnt think she could.
I think she is awesome and cant wait to buy the single and album <3

God, what a complete disappointment of a song. I was so excited and hyped up for this (esp with the as-usual complete wank-off hyperbolic PJ write-up) and it’s just insipid, bland, generic RnB that would have barely registered its presence if it was by anyone else but The Cole. Yes, it will grow on you; yes, it’s inoffensive but it’s so underwhelming and such a massive missed opportunity

Yet will it be a hit - most probably… But in a world where The Dolly Rockers flopped?! *sob*

Why do people think this is lite R&B;?? This isn’t even close to R&B;! And I like Cheryl Cole and was looking forward to a huge song but this is what she releases?? This song is boring, terrible, the lyrics are so elementary and the song is just awful. It won’t grow on me at all. I’ll just wait for the next single from her and for Nadine Coyle to release something as she is the only REAL talent in GA. CC has terribly dissappointed me with this song.

Sorry Cheryl how embarrasing for you that people on x factor can sing better than you.  It’s actually the backing singers that save you and the song

Cheryl has only released a solo song and album, what ‘s the problem? Why shouldn’t she cash in on her elevated status that X Factor fame brings her.  It doesn’t matter what the song sounds like really, people either warm to Cheryl and think she’s great or they rubbish everything she does because she’s in girl band.  The song will probably get to number one and she works very hard unlike the Z list celebrities who want to be famous for doing absolutely nothing but a brief appearance on a reality show.

This song is awful. And people try to justify the awfulness of the song by saying it’s a grower. That’s not a compliment by saying a song is a grower. Why should I have to listen to the same song 20 times in a row in order for it to “grow” on me. It should catch my attention right off the bat. This song is terrible. Cheryl has gotten too big for her britches. She has believed her own hype. I hope this rubbish and all the slating that it’s getting on the internet finally knocks her back down to earth because this song is crap. Won’t be buying the album. no way!

I love the song! It’s very addictive.I’d buy a single....BUT.....Cheryl, I like you, don’t get me wrong, the only thing is that you need to work at your vocals. Your voice is not strong enough. Work at your vocals and you’ll be perfect. Well done! grin

    This song is shit.

Anyone who says different is an idiot.

It’s crap, and her voice does not suit it at all.  And listen to the music - it sounds so cheap.

She could have come out with something so cool and catchy, instead she wants to go all ‘R&B;’ and as aforementioned, it’s shit.

Thank God she’s pretty… this was really pathetic.  I’ve seen better singing and dancing at the local primary school.  Scary!  She needs new advisors ASAP!

Absolute garbage and a take off of janet jackson.

Oh how pretty she is until she opens her mouth and spouts that hideous geordie brogue.

Horrendous and she has been found out for the telentless slapper that she is .

  • andy miller
    October 19th, 2009

You all must agree that the song and cheryl are absolute nonsense and neither she nor ashley need the money. If you did like it and are thinking about buying the album.....then think again and donate the money to help for heroes .......why should you make the little geordie slapper or her scum bag husband any more money?

i think the song is great but the music video could have been better if it wasnt completely focused on her. she should have told the story more than just dancing because that gets boring after a while!
