Cheryl Cole 3 Words (single) shit or hit?

Though we’ve already said nice things about the song as part of the album review, Cheryl Cole’s 3 Words had its first play on Radio 1 yesterday and because you lot have now had your chance to hear it, and we know your fanatical love of Cheryl Mrs Cole Chezza we thought we’d bring you a shit or hit on the song alone. Hit “see more” to see what we think, and as always, have your say.
Yesterday Rach described 3 Words as the eeriest yet most oddly compelling love song I’ve heard in a while with spooky strings and synths the order of the day.
And I totally agree, I’ve worn out my thesaurus looking for new fawning ways to describe this song, but the fact I spent 2,466 seconds of my life listening to it yesterday should go some way to telling you how I feel about it. Oddly for a love song, it starts moody, dark and totally empty and journeys to a particular favourite of mine - a brilliant trance-y final third that begs to be - and at teentoday.co.uk towers has been - turned up to obnoxious levels.
And although Fight For This Love has grown on us slightly, I’d go as far as saying 3 Words is everything that track is not - brave, exciting, different and most importantly absolutely NOT what you’d expect from Cheryl. It also sounds nothing like anything else on our iPod (well, if we hadn’t drunkenly given it to a drag queen and never got it back TRUFAX); infact it’s what proper music critics would call a Very Good Track. From what we’ve read on youtube and twitter, you lot agree with us. Which makes a nice change.
And almost as good as all that, though we still can’t quite make out what Chezza is saying (it’s M-E-T-O-O not L-E-T-O-O), the production of her delicate vocals that sit gently atop the beat, see a far more liberal application of autotune. Yes, this track even sounds like the person singing it.
With this song a potential second single, this campaign makes a whole lot more sense. The totally inoffensive Fight For This Love will see an army of casual music listeners flock to Tesco (or wherever your mum buys music) and see Cheryl trounce the charts - a world of pop lovers will rejoice, champagne corks’ll be popped and there will be back-slapping and smugness at Record Label HQ. Then, the release of 3 Words (or Parachute or Heaven or Happy Hour) will inject some much needed passion and credibility into the whole campaign.
And if you listen to the clip below you’ll hear Cheryl have a small orgasm (first time in a while and all that *guffaw*) when the song finishes - for someone who has seemed a bit meh about this whole thing (why should we care if you don’t, eh?) it’s what we’ve been waiting to hear. We knew you had it in you Chezza, just don’t let us down on Sunday alright?

I agree with the comments that it’s more credible song coming from Cheryl, it’s unusual and a brave attempt that she’s pulled off. I just can’t click with it like I can with Fight For This Love. I think it’s cos I like the backing music and melody of FFTL whereas 3 Words can seem wishy-washy to me. The vocals don’t flow (which is what makes this track so good to most but is reason I’m not as keen). Also the lack of backing music ie chords etc rather than a basic guitar is prob another reason I’m not as in love with this. But I think she’ll do really well and it’ll be a hit. Certainly she’ll receive critical acclaim from industry bigwigs which she won’t with FFTL.

I absolutely adore this song! Can totally understand Cheryl’s love for it, being such a big fan of her i did my fair bit of ‘squeeeing!!’ with excitement when i first heard it.
It’s just one of those tracks that makes you stop doing everything else, just listen and go ‘my God that’s good!’.
Cheryl’s vocals sound amazing on this, full of the ‘hurt’, full of emotions tone she’s always been so good at. The song is haunting, dark, beautiful - all these things wrapped around a banging dance tune. This track will be incredible to hear in clubs, especially the ‘You are the love of my life!’ bit where it all kicks in. Fantastic!
(I also think it sounds a little New Order and Radiohead at parts, which adds to it’s goodness as they’re two of my fave bands).
I also love how experimental/out-there this track is. For all Fight For This Love’s greatness as a solid pop/R&B;track, in some ways it is pretty by the numbers, whereas this is like nothing else. It takes you on a musical journey that is daunting yet mindblowingly good at the same time. Probably what a night with Cheryl herself would be like!

I agree with everything in this tbh! At first when i heard the intro i was a bit unsure but in true cheryl style, im hooked. I personally think this should have been released before FFTL! Her vocals are actually really good in this too, im very impressed!

The single 3 words has now made me excited to here the album. I love the raw-ness in Cheryl voice as if its really coming from her voice. I’ve heard bad reviews of the album having too much Will I Am on it, but what i’ve heard from 3 words, they work well together. Similar voices. The song will be fantastic in clubs and i can see why Cheryl is excited abou tit.

I think it sounds really good, really unsual and brave of her to attempt. Whatever Cheryl tries to do though she’ll pass at it, she’s loved by a lot of people and to come through what she has in the past makes her more admirable. I’m excited about her as a solo artist, can’t wait to see what’s to come from her.

Unlike the rest of Chezza’s fans, I AM NOT DEAF. Listen baby, you’re a lovely lass, absolutely gorgeous, but this over exposure is totally making me annoyed.
I wouldn’t mind if it was because you were REALLY talented, but unfortuanetly for some other REAL talanted person, you were in the right place at the right time (underneath Mr Cowell perhaps). You were always in GA and none of your solo songs are as good as the GA ones.

I think it’s rubbish. There are so much better songs on the album than this. It will probably get to number one because it’s Cheryl, not because the song is good. I have her album but wont be buying or downloading the single. It’s not single material, plus the video is painfully awful. 3 Words is nowhere near a hit unfortunately, it’s shit.

Hmmm… I just can’t seem to click with this song. I wasn’t a big FFTL fan either which (let’s be honest) would not have done as well as it did if it wasn’t “The Nation’s Sweetheart” singing it.
The thing about 3 Words is that it doesn’t seem to fit together very well and the lyrics are pretty basic (how many times do she and Will.I.Am have to say “I love you”?? We get it guys. Move on.).
However it definately wasn’t what I would have expected from Cheryl and for that I admire her.
