Paolo Nutini 'These Streets' Review

Some strange things about Paolo
Nutini:
1) Despite his name, Paolo Nutini is actually Scottish.
Perhaps all that cold and rain accounts for the tangible
bittersweet sadness that haunts this album.
2) Despite the fact he is about four foot tall and only 19
years old, he has the singing voice of an old man. By that, I
mean a voice that sounds as if it’s been drowned in a mixture
of cigarettes, alcohol and possibly tar.
It’s this gritty yet gorgeous voice that is probably the most
interesting thing about this album. The level of songwriting
and the laid-back stripped-down style may be startlingly
mature for such a wee lad yet the tunes themselves are not
exactly the most exciting. I’ve had the album on for days and,
whilst it is a pleasant listen, I am still struggling to match
many song titles to any memory of a tune.
Stand-outs from the general coffee-table flavour are the
heart-melting single Last Request (watch out for an
even more edible reprise at the end), the toe-tapping skiffle
of New Shoes and the yearning nostalgia of Rewind.
This is an album for lonesome nights and mellow moments.
However, Nutini needs to extend his range to prevent him
becoming a one-trick (and one hit) pony. Albeit a very cute
pony with a spell-binding voice.
